Mark Zuckerberg,

I am an American citizen who believes that everybody in this country has a constitutional right of free speech without government oppression. I also believe the concept of free speech throughout social media platforms, such as Facebook, is just as important.

I am also an American business owner. I own a boutique Public Relations firm, and we practice the art and science of media relations, messaging and persuasion through thoughtful communications strategies.

Facebook has given many of my clients a powerful voice; especially small businesses, non-profits and individuals who might not otherwise have the opportunity to communicate to the masses. It is a valuable tool and it has transformed the way many organizations operate.

There are so many inspiring stories posted on Facebook. Stories that touch and uplift millions of people around the world each day. Personally I strive to remain positive and post positive content on an ongoing basis. This has allowed me the help educate, motivate and inspire others.

This year I open my newsfeed to find it bombarded with candidates acting with political recklessness, malice towards the general public and blatantly distorting or making up facts to suit their twisted approach to communicating with the public. This is not unusual given it is an election period, but this year the bombardment is so much greater.  This is their communication strategy and I stand by their right to post their opinions, no matter how uneducated, untrue or irresponsible those opinions may be. I feel strongly, however, that we Facebook users need an option to filter much of this content from our feeds.

I write this open letter to you and Facebook to implore you to create a feature that alters the algorithms allowing each user the ability to BLOCK any and all phrases and/or posts from their timeline by typing certain words or names into an individually managed filter system.  This system should wipe all content containing these words or phrases within that person’s timeline.

This will ensure domestic tranquility and peace of mind therefore restoring the sanity to many of Facebook’s most loyal users.
