Veterans Day 2018 – Show Your Appreciation

For many Americans, honoring and supporting veterans is important. When considering the cost of the freedoms we enjoy, most expressions of appreciation seem to fall short. Are you looking for ways to show your appreciation on Veterans Day 2018? Here are 10 ideas for individuals and families to show appreciation on this day and beyond.

Raise the Flag. Fly an American flag, properly at your home or business.

Show up. Attend local parades and events designed to honor veterans. Your presence is important and demonstrates support. Visit a military museum and experience the stories of military members, their families, and their communities. Learn about the significance of past military action and the men and women who served during times of war and peace.  The Missouri Historical Society will unveil the newly renovated Soldier’s Memorial on November 3rd. Come and enjoy the grand re-opening of this St Louis treasure!

Give. Donate to local and national organizations supporting veterans. The Gary Sinise Foundation, Disabled American Veterans and Vets2PM are just a few examples of organizations doing the most good for veterans and their families.

Visit. Visit a veteran hospital or nursing residence. Spend time with veterans, listening to stories or enjoying some recreational activities.

Send a Letter. Write a note of encouragement or gratitude to a veteran or an active duty service person.

Learn what matters. Learn about the most important issues and difficulties veterans face today and how you can help. Knowing and understanding the issues that matter most is a big step toward being part of solutions to the issues.

Volunteer. There are countless ways to volunteer in your local area. From driving veterans to a favorite lunch spot to helping a veteran find and apply for a job, there are hundreds of ways to help veterans on Veterans Day and beyond. Just Google “Volunteer for Veterans” and watch the opportunities pop.

Stop and say “thanks”.  When you encounter a veteran during day to day activities like shopping or running errands, make a point to stop and thank a veteran for their service. A word or a cup of coffee may mean the world to him or her. This may push you out of your comfort zone but the rewards are huge.

Support Socially. Share information about veteran related causes and organizations across social platforms. Social Media is a tool used by millions to share personal and business information. Use it to demonstrate your interest and support.  Share events, organizational information, and volunteer opportunities.

Advocate. Own a business or manage a corporation? Advocate for veterans in a tangible way by creating programs that support veterans. Market those programs internally and externally creating awareness, support, and advocacy.

It would be impossible to compile an exhaustive list of things to do this Veteran’s Day, and going forward, to show support and gratitude for those who have served this great nation. The team at Chemistry PR and Multimedia encourage you to choose a few of these ideas or others to honor veterans this year and beyond.  Have a great Veterans Day 2018!
