Honor, Dedication and Independence…

Franz Walkup Groundbreaking (51 of 77)Through the R.I.S.E. (Restoring Independence Supporting Empowerment) Program, The Gary Sinise Foundation lends a hand to some of America’s most critically wounded heroes. One of the ways the Foundation accomplishes this is through the building of specially adapted custom Smart Homes for veterans and their families.  Last week, groundbreaking ceremonies for two such homes were held in Woodbury and Munford, TN, kicking off new chapters for U.S. Army SGT Franz Walkup and USMC CPL Christian Brown.

Having survived catastrophic and life-altering injuries, these veterans face a multitude of challenges on a regular basis.  Daily tasks, that used to be simple and mundane, are now extremely daunting or no longer possible.  The specialized technology and features incorporated into the Smart Homes help to impact those challenges, thereby allowing these veterans to become more independent.   Wide hallways, open floor plans, pocket doors, specialized cabinetry and appliances, along with the ability to control various systems such as heating, air conditioning, lights, blinds and security through an I-Pad are just some of the attributes that enhance independence.

Franz Walkup Groundbreaking (36 of 77)The groundbreaking ceremonies for these homes signify the official beginning of construction. Upon arrival, family, friends and supporters make their way past flags that have been carefully positioned by the Patriot Guard Riders. The spirit of community is strong as locals, sponsors, volunteers and Gary Sinise Foundation employees greet one another and discuss the exciting project that is soon to be underway. The Color Guard kicks off the ceremony, followed by the singing of the National Anthem, a few speakers and the ceremonious shoveling of soil. Renderings of the homes are unveiled, showing the veterans and their families what they have to look forward to. Attendees then have an opportunity to mix and mingle. Inevitably, a long line forms leading to the veteran, comprised of those eager to express their gratitude and support. Many hugs and some tears ensue.

Located 55 miles southeast of Nashville, Woodbury (population 2,700) is the county seat of Cannon County and the future home of Franz and Shannon Walkup, and their dogs, Ranger and Molly.  Beautiful woods will provide the backdrop for their Smart Home, which will be constructed outside of town in a peaceful and natural setting. In observing and speaking to some of the attendees, was very apparent the Walkups will be surrounded by a strong support system of loving family and friends.  Franz is looking forward to a new tractor and the fact that his service dog, Ranger, will have a lot of room to chase his Frisbee.

Christian Brown Groundbreking (12 of 92)Munford is a quaint little town, located in Tipton County, just 25 miles north of Memphis.  The wooded and secluded home site will be the perfect setting for Christian Brown, who is an avid outdoorsman.  With his family by his side, he was clearly pleased as the rendering of his Smart Home was unveiled.  As part of the groundbreaking ceremony, demolition began on the house that is currently on the property, signifying that significant progress is right around the corner. Many of Christian’s future neighbors were present, expressing support and welcoming him to their neck of the woods.

These American heroes have spent years recovering from the life-threatening injuries sustained while serving our country. In the face of extreme adversity, they mustered up the will, courage and determination to carry on, and not only survive, but thrive.  These custom Smart Homes, made possible through the Gary Sinise Foundation and their partners, are a large, but overall small token of appreciation for those who have willingly sacrificed so much.
